Hello and welcome to Fair To Say, the first sports blog in the Inquisitr stable. I’m Paul Montgomery, known usually as m0nty. I’m an ex-journalist, I guess you’d say, with a background in technology but a current and abiding interest in sports.
I live in Geelong and have lived in Australia for most of my life, and I hope I’ll deliver some of my typically Aussie enthusiasm for sport through the blog… with a distinctively Australian perspective, of course. Instead of being parochial, I’ll talk about all kinds of sports, including those with no Antipodean involvement. I’m a big devotee in fantasy sports in particular, which led to my co-founding of a successful Australian fantasy football site called FanFooty several years ago which now also has a weekly podcast called the Coaches Box (don’t worry, I’ll try to limit the cross-promotion to this post!).
I’m a voracious consumer of sports media. The Sports tab in my NetVibes contains the RSS feeds of Fire Joe Morgan and After Grog Blog, as well as fantasy-specific sites Dream Team Talk, Dream Team Hero and TooSerious. I subscribe to the podcast recordings of Around The Horn, Pardon The Interruption, This Sporting Life and the Coodabeen Champions. During the NFL season I also read Tuesday Morning Quarterback and Rotoworld, as well as listen to the ESPN Fantasy Focus Football podcast. Of course I’m often found idly watching Cricinfo, NFL.com or Yahoo during live sporting events, not to mention Fox Sports or ESPN on the cable TV.
As you can see from my picture above right, I’m a Hawthorn Hawks supporter in the Australian Football League. I don’t really have any other club affiliations in other sports: I just like seeing a close and fair contest, be it in in the EPL, NFL, IPL, Super 15, NRL, MLB, Formula 1, NBA, Tour de France, or World Cups of any persuasion.
Finally, you might be wondering why this blog is called Fair To Say. Have you listened to Australian sportspeople and the way they talk lately? Every second sentence starts with that phrase. “Fair to say, I’m too old and slow and crap to play cricket any more,” is what Stuart McGill said when he retired (at least in my mind). “Fair to say, I’m not going to be invited to any feminist rallies any time soon,” was the quip from Wayne Carey the other week (as I recall).
I hope all of the things on this blog will be “fair to say”. You’ll be the judge of that!
